the weekend of the miami game (11/07), i tell kato that he should come up to visit, meet the roommates, and maybe hang out with ziqi and/or kenny while he's here. he's a bit reluctant at first, but after some coercing he finally agrees. on his way here he winds up getting lost two or three times, and being well over an hour late as i wind up redirecting him from i95 onto 7, which is the way i actually take coming from fredericksburg, but he finally does arrive in one piece. upon opening his trunk however, he realizes that he's forgotten his pillow, blanket, and guitar hero controller on his couch back home, which immediately puts a damper on things.
we're both starving by this point though, so we head out to try to find some food somewhere. kato suggests popeyes, which turns out to excessively expensive when we finally find it (missed the turn the first time), so we head out and around, through the "eden center" near the gym, finally settling on a pollo campero down on columbia pike that i used to pass by on the way back to the townhouse. finally deciding to get two burritos, we order, which then takes a rather lengthy amount of time..and when we finally get home to eat them, they're rather bland, and i get some taco bell hot sauce for him. we head out to mcdonald's late that night (reluctantly for me, as i was overly tired), discovering for the first time ever that both mcdonald's in charlottesville aren't actually limited to a "late-night menu" by corporate requirement, but are simply too lazy to have it! the one right down the street from the house has the entire menu, 24h.
saturday, we eat breakfast around the same time as marleah's family, who's here visiting from deleware and ny, to watch her brother's soccer game (he plays at american) over in dc. after they leave, we get started raking the front lawn, as one of my "duties" assigned by amanda. not long into it i decide to back my car out and turn up the radio, so it's not quite as boring, and after about an hour or so we finally finish the front, taking a bit of a lunch break (my having leftovers from the week and kato having some ground chicken and rice), before heading back out to do the backyard, where we have to grab a big blue canvas and haul the leaves through the fence door all the way to the curb. some significant talk goes on, as it does during most any extended period of time, about the previous few weekends, the women currently around us and their peculiarities and problems, and so on.
we come back in to catch the uva-miami game on gametracker—there was been a regional blackout for 360, i think. pretty bad loss at landshark stadium, down at the half and not managing to score after that, for a convincing final 52-17. nothing at all like the team from just two years ago, shutting miami out at the last game ever played at the orange bowl before its repurposing. there's been a bit of difficulty in the house, where i've wound up picking up trash/recycling duty, and having a heart to heart of sorts with a roommate, which thankfully clears some things up. attempting to convince her to come with us to dinner and failing, we call up ziqi, and get ready to head out to pf chang's for dinner, as he finally comes over and i get to driving after pulling up directions.
amazing, i actually get lost on the way there. we wind up finding our way to 50 and do eventually get there, as the two of them get to remembering the surrounding area. after waiting about twenty minutes, we get taken to our seat by a cutish girl named brittany, who informs us she'll be our waitress. right after she brings the sauce tray, another server approaches and then immediately turns around, surprised at the table being taken, apparently. the two of them we assume have a talk, as he returns, informing us he'll be our server, and remarkably neither of them making any mention of the apparent mistake.
as i glance over the menu, many entrées appear to be identical not just in name alone, including a variation of "pf chang's take on general tso's." a fancy, high-end chinese restaurant is always something that's eluded my comprehension, especially a chain, as typically chinese restaurants are thought of only as middle-tier, despite the relatively cheap prices compared with typical american restaurant portions. i take some cues from what all makes the place fancy, thinking most of it to be the decoration and design of the building more than the presentation of the food (rectangular dishes, moderate portion sizes). i decide on a wide rice noodle-based dish with beef, while kato settles on mongolian beef (?) and ziqi on pepper steak. all arrive promptly, and are quite tasty, though after sampling mine ziqi comments that he's had better.
we convince him to stay for a bit to watch a movie, but halfway into the ugly truth (which i'd incidentally also watched, but with amanda) he gets up and states that he's leaving because he's so exhausted (from some WoW thing, no doubt), but agrees to get lunch with us tmw. kato and i finish up the movie, me barely finishing my burnett's and gatorade, and after a reluctant wendy's run, we soon get to bed as well. sunday morning i renege on going to mass at 11AM, instead meeting up with ziqi at viet pho, his favorite pho place, and incidentally the place he'd brought me when i first started working up here. i get a #5, kato a #7 and ziqi a #1 (i think). i'm the only one to finish the entire thing however, broth and all, which is quite delicious, just like the first time. as we get up to pay, ziqi graciously takes care of the bill for us.
kato and i head back to the house, and he packs up to get ready to go. i head home not long after kato leaves, intent on not staying too long, but wind up getting back rather late anyway, as i skip 5:30PM mass so mother, josephine, and i can bring a simple cake to the restaurant and wish uncle a happy birthday.

and now, back to your regularly scheduled postings?
am i the only one who thinks it's a bit odd that on a floor full of other professionals, that it's rather unpleasant that people fail to flush the urinals, and/or wash their hands before exiting the bathroom? had an older man today do exactly both as i walked in, leaving after checking himself out in the mirror. uh, it's a good thing our office just got those little portable 1oz purell hand sanitizer things..maybe they should put some in the bathroom for those uninitiated folk.
halloween weekend consisted of grabbing five guys and (re)watching up at jillian's and dragging kato with me. every bit as good as the first time, as i rather amusingly enjoyed every good quotable, from the cone of shame to hiding under the porch. casey and her bff from hs visting from cnu dropped in, the former as macaroni and cheese, and the latter as a dallas cowboys cheerleader. saturday was a shtty game against duke that we lost miserably..though there were a few awesome costumes, hahah. then we watched the notre dame/washington state game instead of surrogates, which was completely astonishing considering how much better than us that both teams played.
after that it was off to zbt's ice luge/halloween party (more or less as a costumeless pink polo-sporting plaid pants-wearing collar-popper), which turned out to be pretty good, though david somehow was mia. got my dance on, met this group of three enthusiastic couples; the more talkative couple (cowboy? and cute policewoman) pulled one girl over whose sister they knew, and then another they didn't know to dance with me, hahah. the dj was good but got a bit repetitive as we neared 2AM the second time, as he spun "party in the usa" again, which was playing when i first arrived around midnight. told zach i was peacing out, but then ran into this black first year guy with a jabberwocky mask who'd been dancing ridiculously all night. he pulled me into a mini dance-off outside as it started to rain, and then again inside while the floor was almost empty (except for those three couples, who were now sucking face). met a talkative/cute first year girl who was outside away from the hallmates she'd come with, taking shelter from the rain (later as i was leaving i'd find her name was lauren). she'd been hating one of the brothers who had gone to tj, as she went to robinson (brittany's old hs), which was amusing. called it a night as i realized things weren't going anywhere, and headed back down grady.
got to 11:30 mass as usual, with the regular lot of people staring at me from across the pews, and the occasional person who's afraid of getting the swine from shaking hands during the offering of a sign of peace. wound up dawdling again and watching a movie and a half (chaos, and crank) as part of some sort of jason statham marathon—ever notice how he basically plays the exact same character in every movie? yeah, thought you might've..

time for some time in fburg?
work's pretty much been going the same as it's been for the past several weeks; nothing in particular really new. headed down to charlottesville again for the weekend, making decent time, and picking up kato at p&t. we eventually head over to jillian's to watch a movie, where casey happens to be on her laptop, out on the couch. i forget to bring the binder, so kato heads back out while i stay, talking with her a bit, and not paying much attention to casey. as he gets back they eventually decide on the proposal (which i'd already watched previously from the band trip), and casey somewhat begrudgingly agrees to say, saying she's tired and is about to head to bed. i guess sensing it being odd that i'd been sitting on the coffee table the entire time, she comments she "doesn't bite," and i sit down next to her while kato winds up sitting with jillian.
as we approach the halfway point, she gets up to go to the bathroom, insisting she'll be back to watch a "another half hour." she of course winds up watching the entire thing, having a grand time laughing at several hilarious moments (sandra bullock and ryan reynolds's characters running into each other completely naked, etc.), while jillian glaringly shot looks over, occasionally with a shushing reminder that one of their roommates was sleeping—kind of struck me odd, being that it's a friday and all, and that girl's a sorority girl, but w/e.
saturday is the georgia tech game where we get behind and never come back, managing only three field goals, and losing with a final score of 34-9. it also rains/pours about the entire game, which was great, too—and to top it all off, i somehow forgot my actual camera, missing the chance to record the only halftime show the band has ever played while in raincoats (though the rain did stop for the entire halftime, fortunately).
on my way back to fredericksburg after the game, i give jennelle a call, and then call kenny, and we wind up having dinner at the restaurant, evan joining us. on our way to jennelle's car, we encounter some guy down by the fasmart, who sounds like he's manhandling some girl who's yelling for him to let her go, etc. the three of us guys walk over, as a black guy in a 300 who was getting gas also pulls up to see what's going on. evan calls 911 to report the incident, as the girl goes and walks off in the other direction with some guy we'd seen passing by the restaurant window earlier. the guy in the yukon accuses the other of being a drug dealer, and speeds off before the police arrive. evan and kenny go around the corner to see if the couple is still there, and to finish giving their report, as jennelle and i wait in the car. finally rejoining us, evan tells us a bit about the laws for concealed carry as we head to barnes & noble for a bit, and then cheeseburger in paradise, which had a live cover band. i pass on drinks, as i still have my burnett's.
we finally wind up heading to jennelle's, kenny and evan crack open a few beers while i mix my watermelon with ginger ale, and we wind up watching revenge of the fallen, i think, but jennelle heads to bed early, and soon enough i'm the last one still awake, so i turn the tv and lights off and try to get comfortable on the oversized one-seater..and wind up forgetting my orange jacket that i'd left on the back of the couch to dry.
sunday was the usual mass and back home, before heading back up to charlottesville kind of late.

the only other away game the band's going to..
work had been a bit slow the entire week, as madan got me to start working on some functionality that viewed a list of records, viewed individual records, and allowed users to edit them. i managed to get all of it except the saving an edit part working..while the entire week i'd been debating whether i wanted to go to the away game @ maryland. i set the condition for myself that if i didn't have anything to do, then i'd go, possibly trying to catch a ride from somewhere in nova rather than spend the gas to head all the way down just to get on a bus all the way back up. thinking we'd had a great time meeting casey and all last week, i send her a fbmsg on wednesday (with a bit of jillian's help), asking whether she wanted to catch a movie with me and some friends, and/or possibly go to the avp concert on saturday with jillian and her friend (since i'd never managed to make it to a concert). i email koch about finding a ride to the game, while idzior texts me..(he's previously fbmsged me, also), finding that a couple people will be going independently of the bus ride.
i'd been talking a lot with diane lately, spending many a late night being kept up until 1AM+, which was becoming rather detrimental to my work performance. somewhere in conversation with her, she tells me that caitlin had actually gone to the unc game (which surprised me since i hadn't seen her at all), and that she was pretty sure she was going to the maryland game as well. having received no response from casey through friday night (and kato attempting to work out a simultaneous hanging out of some sort as well), it was safe to assume that she would not be responding at all, for whatever reason. it was frustrating and a bit confusing at the same time, since typically when you meet someone and enjoy hanging out with them, you don't completely cold-shoulder them when they try to get you to hang out again. since i'm writing this after the fact, as of this posting she still hasn't said a word about it, despite hanging out with us the following weekend..though who knows, maybe it all just comes back to the issue of not being able to ask to hang out with a girl (even in a group with other mutual friends) without her taking it to mean that you're getting interested in her, and not just as a friend.
either way, friday after work i run around near where the gym is attempting to find the abc store that their website's locator says is there. tucked away in the very last spot in the shopping center, i grab a burnett's watermelon 1L (on sale), and don't get lost dragging myself down to cville, in surprisingly the same amount of time despite leaving half an hour later than usual. kato and i head to kroger and wind up grabbing a pack of cranberry lemonade mike's harder, and head over to jillian's to watch a movie with her and her visiting friend from w&m, ginny. drag me to hell gets the vote. it's rather amusing, campy/cheesy as it was..one of those movies where you really can't help but yell at the tv because the characters are being so stupid. as we're watching, casey stumbles in (probably drunk) at one point, asking what movie we're watching, then leaning and squinting to see that me and kato are in fact there again. not saying much of anything, she goes into her room to change or something, and then heads back out without giving us a second look.
diane also called in the middle somewhere, after finishing up a long day (third year ring ceremony, caitlin's birthday, third year infinity ball, etc.). we talk for a bit before she decides to head home rather than come over to wertland to join us for the movie. we finish dmth right around midnight, and decide to pop another movie in, so we followed with 9, which was an r5 with supposedly line audio, but sounded tinny anyway. the story was shorter than any of us expected, though engaging enough to make you wonder about it afterward. we finally get going afterward, as i've got to get up ass-early for the game, but staying up and talking anyway for a while, as always seems to happen when we've got some things hanging on our minds..why casey didn't respond to either of us, and the like.
i call idzior in the morning, asking whether he still needs a trombone, and as expected, i'm always welcome, so i get up and get going. he'd told me to meet under the stadium by the tunnels and that i could park there, which in my sleepy stupor i thought he was trying to screw with me, but realized he was being serious, as there was a metallica concert at jpj that night and the cage lot would be unavailable. of course, the call time of 8AM or so was more like, the load time of 8AM, which meant everyone was still there early, as i track down br06 and josh knight's uniform and get everything loaded.
i wind up trying to sit near phil, since he's the only bone i know other than my ex's current bf, jamie, about in the middle of the bus. diane somehow winds up in the front and doesn't seem to see me or attempt to come back to sit with me, but tj does eventually take the window seat with me, though he won't be suiting up to play at his old grad school. we put in the proposal and have various volume issues that i take upon myself to try to fix by going up to ask the bus driver..getting into pg county early, we stop at a kfc with a leaky ceiling for lunch (where i got four mini sandwich thingies and ate them all), getting to "um" (as it's known up there) with plenty of time to spare. suiting up with raincoats as it's begun to drizzle constantly, taking shelter in this connected open walkway between buildings. as we line up by section, i manage to catch caitlin giving jamie a kiss as she heads off, which i guess was the first time i'd seen them, actually. it was interesting that i didn't really feel anything, nor did it come as a shock..which i guess means that whole year of being severed really did wind up working wonders.
so as we file in there's some shuffling of instruments, though trombones of course are always in front, next to or right behind the drumline (next to, in this case). maryland scrambles onto the field or whatever, with their lyred mostly-brass instruments, and play a decent show for being in rain, though for their size (about as big as our full band) the sound isn't terribly astounding, but that's how we usually feel. and them spelling our "maryland" in cursive always makes me want to spell "virginia" in cursive, instead of just "wahoos" and "uva," but that's another story. the game got off to a slow start, as we were down at the half..and as the sun set the cold and water started to become quite chilly. i couldn't keep my glasses clear at all, as the anti-scratch coating continued to deteriorate, and the team wasn't doing so great, but was hanging in there.
as the half rolled around, we forewent watching the halftime show aside from a bit further up the stands as we headed to concessions under the upper deck. i wandered around a bit, not knowing many of the other band members who were there, before finding malcolm, another first year trombone i'd talked to at the unc game. he asked me to hold his trombone while he headed to the bathroom, while i debating getting food since i wasn't really that hungry yet.
glancing around, i meet eyes with caitlin, whose friends had also gotten into line, and quickly hobbled over with both trombones, intent on actually initiating conversation. surprisingly, our talk goes pretty smoothly, just sort of catching up on what we're doing now, how i'm working as a junior programmer up in falls church and she's in ed school now, working her busiest/hardest semester ever at 20 credits (the same time that i did mine, fifth semester), part time job, among other things. she'd apparently fbstalked me recently, since she knew about the job, and said that her father had seen me at a coffee place (oop, nope!)—er, a sandwich place (perfect pita? more likely) up there—the company he works for more or less helps with finding contracts for the software we write..which i guess means he could be in and around skyline sometimes (it is on leesburg pike, after all). i wondered to myself why he didn't say anything, though..but probably similar reasons as her mother/aunt/sister/brother/cousin/niece have been at games this year and last year, sat right behind me, and said nothing. anyway, as halftime wound down she scurried off to find jamie as we all headed back down into the stands.
in the second half though, maryland started turning over the ball and we started capitalizing as our defense finally started to lock down in all the rain, which wouldn't let up at all. not long after we got back in the stands, i took my gloves off for good, ringing them out off the railing, while several people who were watching laughed at how much water came out of them. my work shoes (no idea where my marching ones are, probably down at the new house) were soaked, though i tried to help by "throwing" water from the concrete beneath me. so, for the last minute or so of the game, we'd backed them up to their 1, and they were on 4th down so they had to go for it, but didn't complete the pass..and we got it at the 1st and goal on the 1, for a final score of 20-9! check the video on espn.com of us doing tag in the stands, at 1:40 XDDD
the win made all the miserable rain worth it, as we trekked back to the buses and got loaded up and changed. as we dumped pants and jackets in bins by bus 1, i ran into caitlin again, exchanging a few words as we headed back for our buses. i was one of the first back on ours (i climb bleachers), so i had some time to get comfortable and back into my jeans and changed into my nscl shirt (which amanda noticed and complimented while i was walking over to the bins, hahah). as we headed back down into va the way i normally go on fridays, we passed by right where 66 gets off onto 29, and stopped at this rather large shopping center with a five guys (among other things that we just happened to not care about). unfortunately about half the band that was there had the same idea, as we all bolted for the place and still wound up about twenty people back in the line.
we got through quickly enough, as i wound up with order 02 as the numbers wrapped around. the other guy bones (jamie, phil, jacob, and garrett (ty phil)) had gotten their food before me, but sarah joined us afterward, too. phil and i'd split a large fry and jamie'd gotten two burgers, and everything was absolutely fckin' scrumptious after that long day, hahah. been a while since i'd had five guys, after all. we somehow wound up watching the matrix on the way back, which i'm pretty sure i've seen countless times..i was rather tempted to start quoting it line by line, but fell asleep not long after it started, waking up just in time for the finale as we're the last bus to pull in back under the stadium. i hang around a bit to say goodbyes to diane and whoever, and give mcquillin a ride back over to wertland. kato's already headed over to wes's place with jillian, and is headed over to t and duck's, so i get changed (he left the door open) and make my way over to x-lounge, luckily finding a spot on the next street over.
this time it pretty much turns out to be a bust, as kato gets drinks with t and jillian, and i attempt to get my dance on on the floor, to no avail. some chick is all over this black dude in a suit to my right, these older people are to my front and left, and i'm right in front of the dj. as we head out at 2AM, kato tells me he'll be heading back over to t and duck's, then wes will drop jillian off and then him off, so for me to meet him back at the aptment in half an hour or so. 3AM rolls around and there's still no sign of them, so i leave him a voicemail and get into bed.
mother'd been getting on me about not really spending any time at home, just sort of stopping in and jetting out..so i told myself i'd make an active effort to get home earlier after mass..except i set my alarm incorrectly for the time mass started instead of an hour before, and wound up dawdling until to the 5:15PM one, and then wasting some more time before heading back to fburg for a bit longer, and not getting back up to fc until around 11PM. the ladies'd already headed to bed, so i soon did the same. it'd been a long weekend, and it was nice to finally get some rest.

i wind up trying to sit near phil, since he's the only bone i know other than my ex's current bf, jamie, about in the middle of the bus. diane somehow winds up in the front and doesn't seem to see me or attempt to come back to sit with me, but tj does eventually take the window seat with me, though he won't be suiting up to play at his old grad school. we put in the proposal and have various volume issues that i take upon myself to try to fix by going up to ask the bus driver..getting into pg county early, we stop at a kfc with a leaky ceiling for lunch (where i got four mini sandwich thingies and ate them all), getting to "um" (as it's known up there) with plenty of time to spare. suiting up with raincoats as it's begun to drizzle constantly, taking shelter in this connected open walkway between buildings. as we line up by section, i manage to catch caitlin giving jamie a kiss as she heads off, which i guess was the first time i'd seen them, actually. it was interesting that i didn't really feel anything, nor did it come as a shock..which i guess means that whole year of being severed really did wind up working wonders.
so as we file in there's some shuffling of instruments, though trombones of course are always in front, next to or right behind the drumline (next to, in this case). maryland scrambles onto the field or whatever, with their lyred mostly-brass instruments, and play a decent show for being in rain, though for their size (about as big as our full band) the sound isn't terribly astounding, but that's how we usually feel. and them spelling our "maryland" in cursive always makes me want to spell "virginia" in cursive, instead of just "wahoos" and "uva," but that's another story. the game got off to a slow start, as we were down at the half..and as the sun set the cold and water started to become quite chilly. i couldn't keep my glasses clear at all, as the anti-scratch coating continued to deteriorate, and the team wasn't doing so great, but was hanging in there.
as the half rolled around, we forewent watching the halftime show aside from a bit further up the stands as we headed to concessions under the upper deck. i wandered around a bit, not knowing many of the other band members who were there, before finding malcolm, another first year trombone i'd talked to at the unc game. he asked me to hold his trombone while he headed to the bathroom, while i debating getting food since i wasn't really that hungry yet.
glancing around, i meet eyes with caitlin, whose friends had also gotten into line, and quickly hobbled over with both trombones, intent on actually initiating conversation. surprisingly, our talk goes pretty smoothly, just sort of catching up on what we're doing now, how i'm working as a junior programmer up in falls church and she's in ed school now, working her busiest/hardest semester ever at 20 credits (the same time that i did mine, fifth semester), part time job, among other things. she'd apparently fbstalked me recently, since she knew about the job, and said that her father had seen me at a coffee place (oop, nope!)—er, a sandwich place (perfect pita? more likely) up there—the company he works for more or less helps with finding contracts for the software we write..which i guess means he could be in and around skyline sometimes (it is on leesburg pike, after all). i wondered to myself why he didn't say anything, though..but probably similar reasons as her mother/aunt/sister/brother/cousin/niece have been at games this year and last year, sat right behind me, and said nothing. anyway, as halftime wound down she scurried off to find jamie as we all headed back down into the stands.
in the second half though, maryland started turning over the ball and we started capitalizing as our defense finally started to lock down in all the rain, which wouldn't let up at all. not long after we got back in the stands, i took my gloves off for good, ringing them out off the railing, while several people who were watching laughed at how much water came out of them. my work shoes (no idea where my marching ones are, probably down at the new house) were soaked, though i tried to help by "throwing" water from the concrete beneath me. so, for the last minute or so of the game, we'd backed them up to their 1, and they were on 4th down so they had to go for it, but didn't complete the pass..and we got it at the 1st and goal on the 1, for a final score of 20-9! check the video on espn.com of us doing tag in the stands, at 1:40 XDDD
the win made all the miserable rain worth it, as we trekked back to the buses and got loaded up and changed. as we dumped pants and jackets in bins by bus 1, i ran into caitlin again, exchanging a few words as we headed back for our buses. i was one of the first back on ours (i climb bleachers), so i had some time to get comfortable and back into my jeans and changed into my nscl shirt (which amanda noticed and complimented while i was walking over to the bins, hahah). as we headed back down into va the way i normally go on fridays, we passed by right where 66 gets off onto 29, and stopped at this rather large shopping center with a five guys (among other things that we just happened to not care about). unfortunately about half the band that was there had the same idea, as we all bolted for the place and still wound up about twenty people back in the line.
we got through quickly enough, as i wound up with order 02 as the numbers wrapped around. the other guy bones (jamie, phil, jacob, and garrett (ty phil)) had gotten their food before me, but sarah joined us afterward, too. phil and i'd split a large fry and jamie'd gotten two burgers, and everything was absolutely fckin' scrumptious after that long day, hahah. been a while since i'd had five guys, after all. we somehow wound up watching the matrix on the way back, which i'm pretty sure i've seen countless times..i was rather tempted to start quoting it line by line, but fell asleep not long after it started, waking up just in time for the finale as we're the last bus to pull in back under the stadium. i hang around a bit to say goodbyes to diane and whoever, and give mcquillin a ride back over to wertland. kato's already headed over to wes's place with jillian, and is headed over to t and duck's, so i get changed (he left the door open) and make my way over to x-lounge, luckily finding a spot on the next street over.
this time it pretty much turns out to be a bust, as kato gets drinks with t and jillian, and i attempt to get my dance on on the floor, to no avail. some chick is all over this black dude in a suit to my right, these older people are to my front and left, and i'm right in front of the dj. as we head out at 2AM, kato tells me he'll be heading back over to t and duck's, then wes will drop jillian off and then him off, so for me to meet him back at the aptment in half an hour or so. 3AM rolls around and there's still no sign of them, so i leave him a voicemail and get into bed.

mother'd been getting on me about not really spending any time at home, just sort of stopping in and jetting out..so i told myself i'd make an active effort to get home earlier after mass..except i set my alarm incorrectly for the time mass started instead of an hour before, and wound up dawdling until to the 5:15PM one, and then wasting some more time before heading back to fburg for a bit longer, and not getting back up to fc until around 11PM. the ladies'd already headed to bed, so i soon did the same. it'd been a long weekend, and it was nice to finally get some rest.

homecominnnnnng :DD
so, the first weekend after moving into the new place, it was off to uva again, for homecoming. finally, a more-than-legitimate reason to be back in charlottesville. funny how some of us wind up going far, while others stay close.
the weekend consisted of largely cmbaa events, centering mostly around the game, against never-before-have-we-played indiana (which a lot of my latiny friends attend or attended (including meeting one when i convention was held there, with whom i/we kind of had a thing going for each other but then quickly died out after convention ended)). MA's roommate also went there for undergrad, and is now at uva for grad, so that made it amusing for an "it's a small world after all"-type connection. since kato actively refused to be associated with them in any way (even as my guest and a former member), he didn't come to any with me, including the game (since i'd be sitting with them), which was disappointing. so friday, i managed to make it to baja bean's upstairs about an hour after the start time, wandering around a bit before sitting with mcclelland, tanya, and a friend of theirs. as more people starting coming in, they eventually got up to play darts at the unoccupied board, and i moved to sit with sarah (current dm), veronica, and a few others, including an alumni from the 60s, tryon, whose name it took several tries for us to get right. teri (guard) joined us, as well as rachel (tenor sax, uts). sarah of course, was sitting next to this guy i'd spotted earlier, playing pool with our old drumline captain, chris. turns out he was the guest vocalist for the halftime show (featuring three disney medleys), ivan rutherford—who happened to have actually been roommates with pease back in college, and went on to star as valjean in over 1800 performances of les mis on broadway, among other notable roles, along with guest starring in the holiday concert last year.
as the crowd of band people kept growing, he bought a round of coronas for the girls, and the conversation went from meeting the clintons while in his dressing room at a show (while bill was still president), to a stint in japan (including trying to help a piss-drunk clubgoer laying out on the street)—one of the first big things he did as a performer, to a little old lady remarking how he reminded her of a celebrity while he was at lunch the previous day with pease and koch (amusingly (and to his chagrin—he was expecting someone like brad pitt), she said "robin williams," which i'd find even more amusing the next day, because one of the show selections was "friend like me," from aladdin..sung by genie, i.e. robin williams). he was a really easygoing guy, and every one of his stories was as intriguing as the last..and perhaps best of all, no different-looking than you or i, and rather humble about it all..though his stature (maybe 5'8ish?) probably didn't help that much, lol. things finally started wrapping up, as we headed downstairs.
thought about leaving, but wound up sitting with idz, dk, hondula, and his g/f whom i'd ran into earlier, when she came with a non bandie. had a good talk about randomness, before kato called as midnight drew near, wondering where i was. headed back soon after that, ending the night quietly, i think. long saturday ahead of me, as it were..
woke up early for the cmbaa meeting at 9AM, with bodos and oj, over at this room on the bottom floor of ruffner (ed school), which i'd actually never been inside, all these years. went through a lot of things, showing the new rehearsal hall floor plans and rendering on culbreth, electing officers..got snubbed again for treasurer, as familiarity with someone who's been doing the job takes precedence over qualifications. headed over to practice with erik, rick, breanna, and lauren? watched for a bit before walking back to kato's because i forgot my ticket, then grabbing the usual mcdoubles before having him drop me off at mcclelland/rachel's house. it's at events like these that i remember the dominance kkpsi has in so many aspects of the band, from leadership positions to our own alumni association, and it's irritating because they have their own alumni association that they can build independently of the cmb one, and yet the entire exec board and members at large are now run by them. what's even more frustrating is that by the time i could finally rush/pledge, i decided it wasn't worth the effort, and that making sure i didn't get a third academic probation (meaning suspension) during my fourth semester (spring of second year) was more important, or otherwise i more than likely could've been in just as easily as anyone else, especially with the people who were in it at the time.
anyhow, so a good number of people were there; ben (from my hs) brought his gf from johns hopkins, and we watched some other game that'd already started. tj, kyle, and others was there as well, along with various others as i dug into some classic american food (cheeseburgers and potato salad), and tried some new sierra mist. several people splintered off in groups to attend other tailgates and/or get to the game earlier, while the residents and a few others stayed to clean up. i wound up leaving with chris (former dm), as we tried to track down q, who had lance's ticket, and wound up intercepting (yay football term) him and his gf on the way to the stadium. they didn't even bother checking me for anything, and we took our seats in the rows a few up from the very front. colin and hayley spotted the lot of us and joined two rows in front of me, while i had an entire row to myself saved with jackets for other people, directly behind jimmy and erik. some random girl who'd gotten there earlier was to his right, on the end, which became amusing as the game went on.
things got off to a good start though at 3:30PM, with us taking an early lead, and dominating on both sides of the ball. band had an amazing halftime performance with ivan, and it was a huge hit with the crowd.
eventually indiana finally got its lone td and pat in the fourth, thought it was perfectly preventable. a solid win (especially after the previous week's low-scoring showing at unc), as i stuck around afterward to sing the good old song down on the field. heading up the stands, i called kato, who tells me he's at this bus driver friend of his's apartment over on wertland, and for me to meet him over there—i suggest dinner and a movie. as i'm still on the phone, leaving the stadium, i turn around to see all the alumni getting their picture taken on the field. unable to decide whether to try to run down and join them, i eventually head back that way, running into taylor's parents up top, waiting for her, and strike up conversation with them as we leave with her and tiago, headed for o'hill. pass caitlin near the truck and say hello with a smile, and stick around for a while longer before they go, chat with diane a bit about plans for the night, and head off to u-forum to retrieve my car.
i manage to find a random empty spot outside the apartment, and head on up. jillian opens the door, greeting me: "we didn't order any chinese food.." which i sarcastically laugh off. we play guitar hero a bit (solo, since she'd messed up the world tour situation with a newer controller), and i meet casey (whose room is on jillian's side of the apartment), who sits down with us as she has a yocrunch since she's just gotten back from the game also. she eventually heads back to her room as we attempt to decide where to eat, but come up empty. as jillian goes into her closet to change, i look around her room a bit and hang around in the hallway, eventually attempting to convince casey to come with us. seems she'd stayed out until 7AM the previous night, and'd gotten limited sleep before the game, but reluctantly agrees to go on one condition: that she gets to chose the place we're eating—qdoba. as we head out to drive over to the corner somewhere, we see a parent attempting to get his car un-towed, so we decide to take my car instead, snugly slipping into an empty spot in front of the white spot.
qdoba's surprisingly empty except for a group that can be heard in the back. we go through the line getting our food, casey knowing what she wanted and going first, with me behind her (since kato and jillian are sort of paired off in conversation). the two of us get our food and water, and sitting at some tables up near the front. the group of us seem to hit it off immediately though, as casey bounces back and forth just like me and kato, talking about her late night, the musical perfection of jay sean's down and keri hilson's knock you down, and her previous two-year stint on the dance team, among other things. i was pretty surprised, since she seemed rather reluctant to come out initially, but without any prompting actually said that she was glad she decided to come. an hour and a half later (by now trying to finish my burrito has given way to nonstop conversation), we finally head out, dropping casey back off over on wertland, and agreeing to facebook each other, since she's somehow the only casey brown at uva.
when we finally get back to kato's place, he tells me we basically don't have any more time to watch a movie, to which i protest but begrudgingly agree. we get changed and head over to t and duck's (those are nicknames) with wes and jillian, and eventually down to x-lounge and/or rapture. this time however, i don't really wind up dancing with anyone other than occasionally sandwiching jillian between me and kato. as x-lounge closes up, this girl who's crying and been left by her friends somehow winds up stuck with us, as we try to decide whether to go somewhere, or just go back to t and duck's to keep the night going. jillian kind of goes from person to person to try to stay warm as i deflect her; most of us have worn long-sleeved dress shirts, though the cold cuts through even them. this girl is lisps through tears on the phone with her ex, trying to track down her friends, as we strongly debate calling a cab. kato and i sit down on the curb, taking a bit about jillian's behavior, and wes finally calls for a van cab. two arrive and as we attempt to get into one and wave the other off, he denies us trying to fit seven people in, so me, kato, and wes stay behind and we're left cabless again. wes calls a cab friend of his and we go (off the clock) back to t and duck's, where we hang out for a while longer before eventually having wes drop us (me+k+jillian) off, back at kato's.
sunday's a typical sunday, mass and all, with a movie before briefly stopping through fredericksburg on the way back to falls church.

the first week!
wow, it's been a while..uhm, where to start? i guess the first few days were a lot of talking with amanda, and marleah when she wasn't working at b&n, but the enthusiasm seemed to drop off rapidly after that, where it's sort of settled. i'm not really sure what the deal is, other than that maybe she felt like she told me a little too much too soon? the occasional conversation does still occur, but nowhere to the initial frequency there was. oh well; i've certainly got quite a bit of time here, soo i'm not too worried.
there was a hanson concert she'd wanted me to go to, originally written on the calendar (pink for her, purple for amanda, and an as-yet undecided color for me (mostly because i can't find a green marker, and my 27-pack or whatever of sharpies is still down at the new house)) as being on thursday the 22nd, later corrected to tuesday the 20th. day came and went (yesterday), and marleah couldn't switch her off days, or wasn't particularly enthusiastic about wanting to go, so amanda didn't, either..
annnyhow, it feels good to get back into the swing of things..who knows, maybe i'll even find a new workout buddy there, if the girls keep not going/not being able to go..and ultimately, get big and skrong! because no matter how big i think i am, i could always be bigger!..at least, until i've put on 30lbs. or so, then i might okay for a while. it always amuses me slightly though, that the average person probably needs to and/or is trying to lose weight..course, i'm sure that'll come in handy once i'm my dad's age..

i finally signed up at fitness first yesterday for $29/month, with a $50 initiation fee, prorated for the rest of october for $10, along with a prepaid final month ($89 total), with the ability to cancel at anytime for no fee, with 30 days' notice (and the new address), along with an annual "facilities improvement fee of $25, charged in march. got nauseous towards the end of the workout again (just like the first time), coming to the realization i hadn't eaten in about three hours—though i had had some protein shakeness beforehand. today was a lot better though, getting in lower back, shoulders, and triceps..and attempting to kill my forearms, quads, and abs, as usual. abs and back at the same time probably isn't the best idea, but i try to space them out so it's not as bad..had trouble doing a last set of decline sit-ups (couldn't quite put my hands behind my ears because my arms were swoll) and pulldowns (because i'd killed my tris already with what i thought was a 40lb. dumbbell but was actually a 55). annnyhow, it feels good to get back into the swing of things..who knows, maybe i'll even find a new workout buddy there, if the girls keep not going/not being able to go..and ultimately, get big and skrong! because no matter how big i think i am, i could always be bigger!..at least, until i've put on 30lbs. or so, then i might okay for a while. it always amuses me slightly though, that the average person probably needs to and/or is trying to lose weight..course, i'm sure that'll come in handy once i'm my dad's age..

ze new place and soforth
so sunday, up early for mass, then headed to chili's with wes..ran into dan d. from band, who told us about happy hour now extending to the weekend as well, and mentioned 50¢ mini burgers, which i was pretty sure the waitress (cute) reiterated, but as 99¢ and having to buy them in pairs. had a good time watching some football (and a girl with her boyfriend at the table next to us occasionally laughing as she overheard things wesley was saying (about the game, to us, and to the waitress)), but when i got the check, it turns out they were actually $1 each, but i didn't bother questioning, since the waitress was really good for a change (though the place being almost empty probably helped with her excellent service and attention, hah).
amanda called on the way home, asking about when i'd be moving in, to which i asked if a little later than originally planned (5PM) would be okay, which she said would be fine. mother'd prepped the usual zhajiangmien, and various stir-fried dishes. finally got up there around 9PMish to move in..i still haven't thought of a good nickname for the house yet though, because up until now it was just "amanda and marleah's house." maybe it'll be "our house," except it's not really in the middle of the street? it's towards the end of a court, though! but yeah, came in the middle of a traditional lifetime show marathon (army wives, etc.), with the two of them having finished some popcorn, and working on some gluten/dairy-free cake, and marleah sipping some white zinfandel. sat to watch for a bit as amanda got me and herself some more cake (with frosting!), before making the seven trips or so to grab all my stuff, coming back to sit down with amanda laying on a pillow/marleah's lap, and having her hair being played with, hahah. talked to both a good while longer before finally heading to bed, trying to sleep in a new, unfamiliar place that i'm trying to learn to call home.
